(Irish Republican Army 1917 – 1922)

In October 1917 a convention in Dublin formalised the Irish Republican Army. Éamon De Valera was elected president, Michael Collins the director of organisation, and Cathal Brugha Chief of Staff.

Its members emerge from, the Irish volunteers that were founded in 1913, The Irish Republican Brotherhood founded in 1858.

The old IRA became the official army of Ireland after the establishment of the 1st Irish Parliament in January 1919.
