The IRA relied on local tradesmen and farmers to carry out their activities. Forges were particularly important–this forge was used to make the first bomb in the locality, and to provide raw materials for the war effort.
Ned Moloney was the local blacksmith, and remembered being in this building with the Vice-Commandant of Cork No. 1 Brigade ‘the first night a bomb was made.’ Moloney let the brigade use his forge to supply equipment for their bomb factory, and served as ‘Governor’ of ‘Sing Sing’ prison in Kilquane Cemetery.
